The Washington Capitals went into last year’s playoffs as an overwhelming favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the first round by a well-prepared Montreal Canadiens team and their hot goaltender, Jaroslav Halak. Currently, the Capitals are in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference.

Even after the disappointing first round loss, the Capitals made only minor changes to their roster. They chose not to resign goaltender Jose Theodore, forwards Brendan Morrison and Eric Belanger, and defenseman Joe Corvo. These players had only minor roles on the team, and were replaced this year by younger players from the Capitals’ minor league team in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
The offensive players on the Capitals’ roster are possibly the best group in the NHL. Superstar Alexander Ovechkin is one of the most prolific goal scorers in the league, and has already won the Hart Trophy twice. He is joined on the forward lines by Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Laich and Mike Knuble. The goaltending duo of Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth is more than adequate, and at times, they are outstanding.
The Capitals have the reputation of only playing at their best on Read the rest of this entry »

After reaching the pinnacle of hockey last season, the Chicago Blackhawks are off to an uninspiring start to the season. They’re hoping a trip to the music city will change their luck. The Blackhawks are off to an 8-9-1 start to this season. They have lost four of their last five games and find themselves in unfamiliar territory for recent times, near the bottom of the Western Conference. After displaying a prolific offensive attack last season, Chicago finds themselves in the middle of the pack in most major offensive categories.

One of the reasons for the slow start could be the play of Patrick Kane. Kane registered 88 points last season and a +16 rating. This season, Kane has 15 points in 17 games. Certainly a respectable number, but his plus/minus Read the rest of this entry »

What was suppose to be a triumphant debut for MLS’ newest superstar turned into the last great memory of a fan favorite in Houston. Brian Mullan, now with the Colorado Rapids, came on as a second half substitute and headed home an Andrew Hainault cross late in the match to provide the Houston Dynamo with a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls.

The match was the debut of French international Theirry Henry, who unexpectedly went the full 90 minutes and set up the first Red Bull goal. Henry showed a glimpse of what he could be for the Red Bulls terrorizing the Dynamo backline and showing his pace and skill.
Mullan had been on the bench due to the impressive form of second year player Danny Cruz. However, Mullan was in good form himself and entered the match and produced the tying goal playing out of position at forward. It was the Read the rest of this entry »

The Galaxy kept in-stadium competitors Chivas USA to a 2-1 win in a very choppy SuperClásico game on Sunday night in the Home Depot Center. The triumph places the Galaxy back in contention for the 2010 Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield along with merely 3 matches remaining to play inside the regular season. 1st half goals coming from Buddle & Beckham had been sufficient to beat a second-half attack via Alan Gordon as LA got home their 3rd sequential SuperClásico trophy.

Chivas USA’s defeat, their 3rd in several matches, efficiently eradicated Martín Vásquez’s men from post season competition for the 2010 playoffs. The Goats won’t find playoff participation since 2005. Sunday’s match had been mostly an account of 2 halves, with the 1st owned exclusively to LA.
